7 Facts You Didn’t Know About Magic Mushrooms - Archived

Magic mushrooms have been stigmatized all over the world, but they can offer many benefits to their users, including improvements in mood, focus, and creativity.

It’s hard to get information about mushrooms online since they’re still illegal in many areas. They’re definitely not as scary as they might seem! We wanted to share some fun, exciting facts about shrooms that you might not have heard about before that could spark your interest in magic mushrooms.

Here are 7 things you probably didn’t know about psilocybin mushrooms!

There are over 200 species of psilocybin mushrooms.

Magic mushrooms probably seem like one specific type of mushroom, but there are actually over 200 species of psychoactive shrooms!

You may have a different experience depending on which type of magic mushroom you take. Ground Sounds offers a variety of options to choose from so you can figure out the best type for you and the rest of your microdosing journey.

Some of the most well-known mushrooms include:

  • Psilocybe cubensis (Golden Teacher)
  • Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Cap)
  • Psilocybe cyanescens (Wavy Cap)

Magic shrooms could be linked to Santa Claus!

What if Santa Claus brought psychedelic mushrooms? Some historians believe magic shrooms could be the reason for some of our Christmas traditions today.

According to legend, shamans in Russia would bring mushrooms as gifts around Christmastime. They were accompanied by reindeer, which were special to their people.

Some say that tripping on the shrooms could make people think the reindeer could fly. Plus, the colors of Santa’s outfit are very similar to those of Amanita mushroom, which is bright red with white spots.

Not everyone buys this story, but it’s interesting nonetheless!

Fungi are more related to humans than plants.

Scientists didn’t distinguish between fungi and plants until 1969. Since then, they’ve found a whole host of ways that magic mushrooms differ from plants.

In many ways, fungi are similar to animals and even people. They don’t photosynthesise; their bodies absorb nutrients through the soil instead. They require a food source and produce waste, so they’re not self-sufficient like plants.

Plants and fungi also have distinctly different ancestors. Plants and animals split from their common ancestors 1.547 billion years ago, while animals and fungi only split 1.538 billion years ago. This might seem like a small difference, but it’s actually nine million years of development!

Magic mushrooms obviously aren’t closely related to humans, but they’re definitely not similar to plants, either!

Shrooms might help people with addictions.

It’s not legal to study magic mushrooms in many areas. However, there have been some studies that point to their effectiveness to treat several conditions, including addiction recovery.

A large eight-month study shows that magic shrooms could help people quit drinking alcohol. At the beginning of the study, all volunteers were averaging seven drinks a day.

They were given two psilocybin doses, as well as 12 psychotherapy sessions during the study. At their eight-month follow up, 80% of subjects had drastically reduced their drinking. At the end of the trial, half of the volunteers had quit drinking entirely.

There’s evidence that mushrooms could help smokers kick the habit, too. Volunteers were given psilocybin doses during the study under the supervision of researchers. 80% of subjects had quit smoking after six months, a success rate far exceeding other smoking cessation methods.

It’s obvious that there needs to be more study into the link between addiction and magic mushrooms.

Magic mushrooms create their own wind.

Mushrooms reproduce using spores, which need to travel on the wind to grow in a new place. However, they’re often sheltered on the forest floor, and wind doesn’t blow that far down.

To solve this problem, some magic shrooms create their own wind! The fungi increase the rate of water evaporation off their surfaces, which creates water vapour in the air. The vapour and cool air created through evaporation, lift the spores.

This method can lift the spores up to 10 centimetres above the mushroom cap, just enough so they can be caught in the natural breeze. It’s amazing how resourceful they can be!

Magic shrooms may have been integral to evolution.

It’s possible that magic mushrooms played a critical role in human evolution! It’s called the Stoned Ape theory, originally proposed by ethnobotanist Terence McKenna in his 1992 book, and it’s gained some traction in recent years.

Human consciousness might have begun when homo sapiens took magic shrooms over 40,000 years ago. McKenna noted that effects of taking mushrooms like augmented empathy and sensory perception are also important to developing the difference between humans and apes.

The Stoned Ape theory remains controversial, but it’s definitely interesting to think about!

Mushrooms could help people with depression.

Mental health is one of the aspects that might be most affected by magic shrooms. They seem to help people with major depression in particular.

John Hopkins conducted a small study to study the link between depression and magic mushrooms. During the experiment, 24 people with major depressive disorder took two doses of psilocybin mushrooms.

After one week, 67% of participants had their depression symptoms cut in half. At a four-week follow up, 71% of subjects saw the same reduction. After four weeks of treatment, 54% of subjects no longer fit the criteria for major depression or only had minor symptoms.

Depression is one of the most common health conditions in Canada and all around the world. What if magic mushrooms could be the solution for many patients?
